Learning about Sustainability — The North Museum Science Fair
The 2012 North Museum Science Fair in Lancaster attracted 350 students from 26 schools to compete for prizes in science-related projects. This year's fair reflected a sustainability theme with an emphasis on energy and efficiency. Many projects focused on creating different forms of useful energy from trash or other materials that would otherwise have been disposed in landfills. Read more...
Creating a Sense of Place in the Historic Village of Marshallton
Strasburg Road passes through a portion of the historic Village of Marshallton in West Bradford Township. Because Marshallton is located on a major collector roadway, the village has experienced higher traffic volumes, increased travel speeds, pedestrian safety issues and deteriorating infrastructure. In 2011, West Bradford was awarded state funding to calm traffic while enhancing the village's historic character and infrastructure through streetscape improvements. The result included uniform brick sidewalks, new curbing with ADA ramps, mid-block crosswalks, bulbouts, gateway median, colored/textured crosswalks, and retaining existing on-street parking. West Chester Saves Energy and Money — Energy Audit Results
In late 2010 and early 2011 West Chester Borough conducted an evaluation of its administration building, public works facilities, library, fire companies and sewage treatment facilities to identify areas where energy use can be reduced and efficiencies can be achieved. Overall, the audit identified areas in which a total of over $50,000 in energy costs can be saved throughout the entire Borough. Prior to the energy audit, the Borough also upgraded the lighting in the Bicentennial Parking Garage. West Chester Borough realized a 43 percent reduction in energy use that saved $1,210 monthly in electricity expenses. Read more...
